Vale John Garrett: Tireless Advocate

Published: 19 Oct 2009

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of John Garrett, former National Secretary of the Fireman and Deck Hands Union and Deputy Branch Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia up until his retirement in 2003.

John was a tireless advocate for maritime workers' rights and was a strong supporter of the world peace movement.  In his youth John was National Organiser of the Australian Youth Delegations to youth conferences in various countries in the world.

I have contacted John’s family and passed on behalf of Council Members, Staff and Membership our deepest condolences and have offered any assistance the family may need.

John's son Sydney Branch Assistant Branch Secretary Paul Garrett  thanks all "MUA officials, staff and members for your  kind messages of condolences following the passing of my father John Garrett yesterday afternoon. Though struggling through nine years of heart disease and to that extent, beating it, Dad finally succumbed to a rare form of lung cancer after a short two month battle and passed peacefully in his sleep at home. At 61 years of age, it was far too young.

"My mother, sister and I have greatly appreciated the dozens upon dozens of messages that have rolled in during the past 24 hours. For those wishing to send flowers through should do so to my mother, Janis Garrett at 75 James Street, Leichhardt 2040. Flowers already received have been greatly appreciated and brought some warmth during this difficult period."
