Maritime Union of Australia. (2025). Offshore Decommissioning Directorate: Evaluation [Submission to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources]

This feedback from the MUA was provided to assist the Commonwealth’s evaluation of the Decommissioning Directorate.

It assesses whether the Directorate has translated the Roadmap’s commitments of encouraging the domestic industry development, improved safety and environmental outcomes, regulatory coordination, collaboration and transparency, into tangible action.

The union states that, despite the Roadmap’s clear intent, activity has been limited to commissioning a small number of analytical studies and entering into a memorandum of understanding with the United Kingdom Government on information‑sharing, with little measurable progress in implementation or delivery mechanisms.

In the absence of published timelines or accountability frameworks, the MUA concludes that the Directorate is not yet delivering on its mandate and calls for decisive action to move from strategy to execution.

The Seaman's Union of Australia and Waterside Workers Federation merge to create the Maritime Union of Australia (1993). The lead-up to the merger saw the Marine Cooks Bakers and Butchers Association (formed in 1908) amalgamated with the SUA in 1983, and the Federated Marine Stewards and Pantrymen's Association merged in 1988. In 1991 the Professional Divers Association also amalgamated with the S.U.A.
