Jake Field

Jake Field grew up in Port Adelaide where he followed his father into waterfront work at age 16 before heading to sea. First elected in 2003 to the South Australia Branch as Deputy Secretary, Jake has worked in offshore oil and gas, construction, and in the National Office as Executive Officer and National Safety and Training Officer.

Jake has also served as Newcastle Branch Deputy Secretary and more recently has led the Union's campaign against the automation of DP World container ports in Australia.


Warren Smith

Warren Smith came on to the Sydney waterfront in 1990. In 2003, he was elected Assistant Branch Secretary of the Sydney Branch and, then in 2007 he assumed the post of Branch Secretary.

In 2009, he was elected Assistant National Secretary. He commenced the role of Deputy National Secretary on 25 January 2021.

Thomas Mayo

Thomas Mayo is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man, elected as an Assistant National Secretary of the MUA in 2023. Before this, Thomas was the MUA’s National Indigenous Officer and a Branch Secretary in the Northern Territory.

Thomas worked on the wharves in Sydney and in Darwin, before taking on leadership roles within the Union and leading the national campaign for Constitutional Recognition of Australia’s First Nations peoples.

Thomas is a signatory to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the author of six books about First Nations people’s struggle for justice, recognitions and equity.


Mich-Elle Myers

Mich-Elle Myers started on the waterfront in 1999 at Patricks in Port Botany as one of the first women at the terminal. In 2009, she took on a national leadership role within the Union as the Women’s Liaison Officer, fighting to get more women employed in the waterfront and seafaring industries.

In the years since, Mich-Elle has served on the board of Unity Bank, on the ACTU’s Executive, as the ALP’s National Vice President, as Co-Chair of the ITF’s Global Women’s Committee and as the MUA’s Growth and Campaigns Director.

In 2023 she was the first woman elected as a National Assistant Secretary of the MUA.


Jamie Newlyn

Jamie Newlyn began his Maritime Career in 1988 as a Merchant Seafarer and later worked as a Wharfie in Brisbane and Adelaide.

In his combined 15 years at Sea and on the Waterfront Jamie was a dedicated Union activist and delegate. Jamie was first appointed to the Honorary SA Deputy Branch Secretary role in 2002 before being elected as SA Branch Secretary in 2003.

Jamie brings extensive Branch, National & International experience. He commenced in the role of Assistant National Secretary on 25 January 2021.

Your Union

The Seaman's Union of Australia and Waterside Workers Federation merge to create the Maritime Union of Australia (1993). The lead-up to the merger saw the Marine Cooks Bakers and Butchers Association (formed in 1908) amalgamated with the SUA in 1983, and the Federated Marine Stewards and Pantrymen's Association merged in 1988. In 1991 the Professional Divers Association also amalgamated with the S.U.A.
