The Canberra Political Resource Centre was established in September 2005 and was officially opened by the Leader of the Opposition Kim Beazley in September 2006.
The Centre has three principal functions performed under the direction of the National Secretary:
Lobbying of state and federal governments, ministers, politicians of all parties and government officials on MUA and wider trade union policy.
Policy Development & Research for submissions, inquiries and union
Communications Keeping national officials informed on developments in the Australian and global maritime industries.

In April 2010, the MUA published a comprehensive package of policy proposal for reform of Australian shipping policy and regulation. On 6 Auust 2010 the Union lodged a submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Inquiry into Industry Skills Councils. The Union submission strongly defends the role and development of Industry Skills Councils and the Transport Logistics Skills Councils in particular.

The MUA hosted a highly successful Seminar for senior Agency policy officials and Ministerial advisers at Parliament House Canberra on 9 April 2010. The MC for the Seminar was Mark O'Neil, Chief Adviser, Government Relations, Rio Tinto. The Seminar speakers were John Francis, Director, Maritime Transport Policy Centre, Australian Maritime College/University of Tasmania, David Burns, Partner Tax, Ernst and Young, and Dr Victor Oyaro Gekara (MICS), Lecturer, Management School, College of Business, RMIT University,
Paddy Crumlin, National Secretary, Maritime Union of Australia and Vice President, International Transport Workers Federation, spoke on shipping policy neglect and the opportunity now before the Government to revitalise Australian shipping.
