MUA Submission to ACCC Re AAT

The MUA has made a submission to ACCC with regard to ACCC's Draft Determination on application by Australia Amalgamated Terminal Pty Ltd (AAT) for authorisation to operate in various Australia ports. The MUA's submission emphasies that AAT should require 3rd parties seeking access to AAT terminals to confirm with minimum labour standards and conditions. A National Ports Strategy – major union speech

In May 2009, Prime Minister Rudd announced that the Government intended to develop a National Ports Strategy.  On 25 June 2009, Assistant National Secretary Rick Newlyn delivered a major speech at the WA Regional Port Authorities Conference.  The speech identifies many of the key issues which the union believes should be addressed in the National Ports Strategy.  The union is consulting with Infrastructure Australia and the National Transport Commission, which have been jointly tasked by the Govenment to develop the National Ports Strategy.  A copy of the union speech is available by clicking here

National Transport and Logistics Industry Workforce Planning and Skills Strategic Action Plan

The Australian Transport Council's National Workforce Planning and Skills Working Group has released its Draft National Transport and Logistics Industry Workforce Planning and Skills Strategic Action Plan for industry and stakeholder comment and input.  The Draft Plan provides twelve high level strategic focus areas for action.  Stakeholder comment is now sought to assist with the development of a detailed implementation plan and specific detailed actions or activities which can be undertaken under each of the focus areas, to address particular workforce planning and skills issues.  For more information: http://www.ntc.gov.au/viewpage.aspx?documentid=1761.  For a copy of the Strategic Action Plan http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reports/NationalTLWPSSAP.pdf.

 

The MUA is represented on the Workforce Planning and Skills Working Group and made a submission to the Working Group in development of the Draft Strategy.

 

Union lodges a supplementary submission to Henry Tax Review on shipping and taxation

Following a recent discussion with Henry Tax Review officials on the taxation elements of national shipping policy, the union has decided to lodge a suplementary submission to the Henry Tax Review in advance of consideration of transport taxation matters by the Henry Tax Review Panel due to occur in early October 2009.  The submission reinforces the union's primary submission of October 2008 that argues for a shipping tax policy that will attract capital invetment in Australian ships (Link to Henry Tax Review homepage -
