MUA National Youth Conference
Melbourne hosted 60 youth delegates from
around the nation over October 29-31, 2008
This was the second MUA national conference of
youth and conference resolved to support the
council decision to make it an annual event.
Delegates were diverse with ages ranging from
17 to 35 year of age, with women up 20 per
cent of the total delegation of 60. Special guests
included three Maritime Union of New
Zealand (MUNZ) youth representatives.
The agenda was changed so that the delegates
could attend the Noel Washington (ABCC)
Rally on the October 31.
The 2008 Youth Conference resolved:
1. To support the National Council decision to
hold annual youth conferences
2. To organise a National MUA Young
Workers' Committee
3. To work towards having a young worker
representative on Branch Committees and
on all workplace committees.
4. To ensure a young workers' page is included
on the union website
5. To adopt the following three themes which
will give young maritime workers the
opportunity to campaign around any issue
a. Organising
b. Solidarity
c. Rights at work
6. To involve the young workers committee in
any international issue / campaign
supported by the MUA and the ITF.
7. That all young maritime workers adopt the
youth declaration endorsed at the ITF
Youth Conference in Brussels.
8. To develop young workers committees to
support all MUA alliances.
9. That all conference delegates become
members of Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA
That all conference delegates support
White Ribbon Day - The International
Day for the Elimination of Violence
Against Women.
Early next year each branch will be responsible
to organising a meeting for all the members
under 35 years of age. This meeting will be
held to start planning activities for the next 12
months
