Maritime Union of Australia 27 Sep 2001
Jun reported to the union rooms after being ordered to change
the piping in the engine room and pump waste into our harbours.
(See MWJ, Jan/Feb 2000) He was armed with photos and maps to show
how and where the procedure was carried out. In so doing Jun could
not risk returning to China. Letters to his family threatened
prison and penalties.
Adelaide delegate Daryl Gray (with Jun below) was active in the
campaign to allow the Chinese seafarer to stay in Australia :
"The ITF and the MUA have successfully saved this man's freedom
and possibly his life," said Daryl "This result was due to support
from ITF and MUA members and officials. Special mention must be
given to Port Adelaide members, wharfies, seafarers and port workers,
who funded Jun's application and gave him ongoing support. Trevor
Charles and the ITF London, branch officials RIck Newlyn and Keith
Ridgeway all played key roles. Thanks also to Bruce Paris from
Westernport who gave me support when I started to struggle with
the frustration of the process."
Jun passes on his thanks too to all who supported him."
