UK wharfies threaten strike

10 August 2004

Dock workers in the UK are voting on industrial action - the first national strike since Thatcher scrapped the dock labour scheme in 1989

Dockers, drivers and other workers at more than 20 ABP enterprises have rejected a 2.9 per cent pay offer and are voting on strike action, Lloyds List reports. But, according to the company, only 300 of its 3,000 employees are covered by

collective bargaining.

The Transport and General Workers' Union is demanding a minimum wage of £7.50 ($13.40) an hour for all employees, a 5% rise for all rates over £7.50 and £10 an hour for drivers.

It also wants an hour off the 39-hour working week and other improvements to holidays, sick leave and parental leave.

TGWU official Graham Stevenson argued: "If it takes a full national strike ballot to make progress so be it."
