US to invest in shipping

16 June 2004

A new bill before Congress will provide US flag shipping with tax cuts to promote the national fleet

US congress is proposing reducing the tax burden on shipowners flying the stars and stripes, Fairplay reports.

The Democrat proposed amendment aims to help US shipping compete on the international market by restoring tax benefits stripped from ship owners in 1986.

It was the extra tax burden said to be to blame for the demise of US investment in shipping and the sales of companies likeSea-Land and APL to foreign owners.
