ILO seafarers' wage up

Minimum rates up to $500 from 2005

10 July 2003

THE International Labour Organisation minimum wage for seafarers is to rise by $35 to $500 a month from the start of 2005.

The ILO minimum rate is being increased, but the pay rise is not mandatory unless national governments choose to enshrine it in domestic legislation.

At present, the International Transport Workers' Federation 'blue certificate' benchmark is $1,300 a month, with the $50 increase that was due at the start of this year still on indefinite hold.
