India moves to protect its flag06 February 2004
Indian government agrees to level the seas with a tonnage tax on foreign vessels, Lloyds List reports The Indian Government has responded to lobbying by national shipowners and unions with a tonnage tax on foreign ships to be included in the 2004-05 budget . Bharat Sheth, joint managing director of the country's largest private sector shipowner, Great Eastern Shipping told Lloyds: "It will definitely offer Indian companies a level playing-field with foreign shipowners." Lloyds List reports that the figure is not expected to exceed 3% of pre-tax profit, compared with the 12%-15% corporate tax shipping firms have been paying.
