French seafarers poised to strike17 December 2003
Seafarers in France have set a 48 hour strike for January in protest against a proposed second register, Lloyds List reports. FRENCH seafarers are battling against a government-backed bill which would creating a new French international register. The strike will be timed to coincide with the start of the bill's passage through the National Assembly in mid January. The unions have already held a 24 hour stoppage on December 11 for the first reading of the bill at the senate, where it was passed without major amendments. They want the government to withdraw the bill, which they say will make them into 'convenience' seafarers under French flag. "Shipowners and the government say that the new register is necessary to bring France into line with other European Union countries, whose national flag fleets have been boosted by the creation of similar registers," Lloyds List reports.
