ITF to help fund Christopher wreck probe

14 August 2003

The International Transport Workers' Federation has announced it will help foot the bill to investigate the wreck of the Christopher, which sank with loss of all hands off Cyprus in December 2001

Most of the estimated $1million needed will come from the Cypriot government, but the plan will also receive a six-figure sterling donation from the International Transport Workers' Federation to investigate how the Christopher'stransverse bulkheads failed.

"The ITF is co-sponsoring this mission in the belief that its findings could greatly strengthen our campaign for the improved care and safety of seafarers on existing bulk carriers, John Bainbridge, assistant secretary of the ITF seafarers' section, told Lloyds List.

"We hope to learn important lessons that we can use and take back to the International Maritime Organisation."
