IMO backs 'black box' for ships08 July 2003
Experts say there is a compelling need for cargo ships to carry black boxes, similar to those installed on aeroplanes NAVIGATIONAL experts at the International Maritime Organisation are backing a feasibility study requiring cargo vessels to carry simplified voyage data recorders, or 'black boxes', in the interests of casualty investigation, Lloyds List reports. The IMO has yet to finalise new performance standards. But it is agreed that the role of the simplified voyage data recorder would be to store data on the position, movement, physical status, command and control of a vessel over a period up to and following an incident.
