A Labor govt to close permit loophole21 November 2003
Shadow Transport Minister Martin Ferguson commits a Labor Government to supporting Australian shipping: "Labor will stop the liberalised use of permits to create unfair advantage for foreign operators to undermine the Australian industry and jobs. " "Maritime industry is a key part of Labor's agenda to rebuild Australia's transport infrastructure. "The Howard Government has left the Australian shipping industry and seafarers hanging out to dry. "The voyage permit system has been used to create a loophole to bypass the cabotage system..... "The Howard Government has a definite policy view that the Australian shipping industry can be sacrificed in the name of cheaper shipping costs for exporters. "In stark contrast, Labor believes in both the national importance of an Australian shipping industry and its importance to shippers. "Unlike the Howard Government, Labor believes that Australia should have and can have an efficient and proficient shipping industry." - A full transcript of Martin Ferguson's speech "Cabotage and ALP Shipping Policy" made at the Australian Institute of Marine Power Engineers National Delegates Conference in Newcastle on November 18 can be downloaded from the website.
