ITF Green Alliance lobby UN03 July 2003
An unprecedented coalition of labour, environmentalists and human rights organisations have joined forces with the ITF to highlight the need for effective governance of the seas in the run-up to this year's UN General Assembly. Armed with a new ITF publication 'Steering the Right Course' the ITF, WWF International, Greenpeace International, Friends of the Earth International, Global Witness and Human Rights Watch lobbied hard for this at the recent UN informal constulation on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, ITF News Online reports. The ITF described the deficiencies of the flag of convenience system in the shipping and fishing industries, explaining how this had led to "real suffering and hardship amongst seafarers and their families as well as damage to fragile marine ecosystems.. " The coalition's case for properly regulated international shipping, a genuine link between ships and flags states and clearly defined responsibilities by flag states won support from a number of delegations at the conference. These issues were included in the conference report for consideration by the UN General Assembly when it meets later this year.
