NSW Divers join MUA en masse

12 August 2002

By Mick Doleman - Assistant National Secretary

One in three NSW divers have now voted to join the union after a unanimous vote at the union sponsored Onshore Diving Seminar held in Sydney on Saturday, August 10.

The 22 onshore divers able to attend the seminar raised ongoing concerns about diminishing employment conditions and the need to get organised. Many other divers sent in apologies saying they were unavailable to attend due to work and other commitments. So those joining the union on the day made a commitment to encourage their work colleagues to sign up with the MUA back on the job.

National Industrial Officer Bill Giddins gave a report on award simplification of divers' federal awards. But divers concluded that their best interests could only be served through enterprise negotiations. And for this to be successful, they need to be effectively represented by the Maritime Union.

Central NSW Branch Secretary Robert Coombs and Assistant Branch Secretary Barry Robson outlined the program of activities in support of the diving membership including the establishment of the rank and file committee to advise the Branch. The meeting elected nine members to the committee at the seminar.

Other activities will include regular divers meetings, newsletters, and the development of networks for divers to communicate.

The Seminar ended in a very buoyant mood with officials and members enjoying a few beers and snacks laid on by the Sydney Branch.
