Sydney M&M Conference, 2008
The 3rd Mining & Maritime Pacific Rim Conference was held in Sydney between the 13-15 April 2008.
The Conference was attended by over 350 national and international officials and delegates from unions in the mining, maritime, manufacturing, road and rail transport, energy and construction industries from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, South Africa, USA, Japan, England, Switzerland, East Timor, Canada, Vanuatu, United Kingdom, Denmark, Belgium, Papua New Guinea and Sweden. All that attended hailed the Conference a huge success. The Mining & Maritime Initiative is now sponsored and funded by eight unions namely MUA, CFMEU, ILWU, NUM, SATAWU, MUNZ, USW and Teamsters. The Conference commenced with a Welcome to Country by Silvia Scott an Aboriginal elder and internationally recognised Aboriginal dance group Descendance. It was formally opened by Maxine McKew, the member for Bennelong, or, most famously, the woman who ended John Howard's political career. Conference attracted many key note speakers like Ken Neumann National Director of USW Canada, Henrik Berlau Secretary 3F, Sharan Burrows ACTU President, David Cockcroft ITF General Secretary and Manfred Warda ICEM, Tony Maher CFMEU General President & Paddy Crumlin MUA national secretary. A Global Education and Support Groups panel was held which launched the DITSELA Education pamphlets which can be used to promote international solidarity to rank and file members around the world and hard and soft copies are available from all participating unions and from the link below. Other Contributions were made from Mich-Elle Myers MUA & Judy Gray CFMEU on the role of women in campaigning and the veterans were represented by Fred Krausert MUA Veterans Association and Tom McMahon a Rothbury 1929 lockout and shootout survivor. A presentation was also given by the MUA & CFMEU Marginal Seat Organisers for their work in the World Renowned Your Rights at Work Campaign. John Maitland supplemented this session with a report on the continued human rights violations still occurring in Burma. The Conference Dinner was addressed by Greg Combet the Member for Charlton and photos of the Conference & Dinner can be viewed through a link below. The second day was focussed on the way forward for the initiative and the regions. Rick Newlyn MUA & Peter Murray CFMEU as representatives on the M&M international committee delivered an overview of the initiative thus far from Newcastle to Long Beach and finally to Sydney and the work of the international, regional and national committees has done since 2002. At the conclusion of the Conference, the Sydney Declaration was passed setting out a comprehensive action plan for the next two years with an objective of holding the next Conference in South Africa in 2010 but only after significant progress has been made on the action plan.
