Australians distrust politicians because they are perceived to be two-faced opportunists who change tack on issues according to how much they can personally or collectively extract from the situation. Political parties should strive to meet the needs of the people they purport to represent, as well as offer leadership and vision. The ALP has got a bit of ground to make up to find mass worker support again. But we’re putting our two-bobs worth into Labor’s national review, so we’ll see.

shipping campaign

    Heroes
Heroes. This is how the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sharon Burrow, describes the men and women who risked everything in defence of their jobs, the Australian shipping industry and, ultimately, all Australian jobs. Holed up on board a dead ship for 14 days, the nine crew members — a grandmother, six fathers and two sons — all took a stand against a global shipping magnate by defying company orders to leave the vessel and allow it to sail the Australian coast under a flag of convenience.

    Workers Caucus
Casuals. This is the big issue still to be resolved between the company and the union as EBA talks get into full swing. “We want the issue of casuals resolved,” said National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. “We can not make any compromises. Otherwise this company is heading for a serious industrial dispute.”

    Wanted Women
Women on the wharves are among the first items to get the nod from both P&O and the union.
