Hungry Mile vet dies

Arthur Brown, (Brownie) one of the last wharfies to walk the Hungry Mile, died on Thursday aged 93, of cancer caused by a life time of lugging hession bags of asbestos on the Sydney wharves.

His funeral will be held at the Macquarie Crematorium, North Ryde.

Brownie was one of the key wharfies who fought for recognition of the Hungry Mile, his story appearing in all major media during the union campaign of 2006.

Premier Nathan Rees paid special tribute to Brownie this month when officially naming the urban place on Hickson Road alongside MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and  Lands Minister Tony Kelly on July 29.
