Unions Fisherman Islands campaign launchTogether we can win!By MUA campaigns
Unions Fisherman Islands is comprised of a group of 11 unions, including the Maritime Union of Australia
Recently we conducted a survey of people who work in the Fisherman Islands, Brisbane precinct. The survey was distributed in workplaces, direct mailed to some union members and handed out at a stall at the BP Station. Thanks to the hundreds of people who completed the survey and returned it, we now have a clear idea of the key issues of concern for workers. Road safety was at the top of the list for the overwhelming majority of workers. Trucks, speeding, unsafe corners and the narrow road were all mentioned as key concerns. The second key issue was the lack of knowledge of any disaster evacuation plan for the precinct. We all know that there is only one bridge providing entry and exit to the precinct and that this presents some unique problems should an evacuation be necessary. Thirdly, the general lack of amenities for the precinct was a major concern. Unions Fisherman Islands is committed to pursuing these and other issues raised in the survey. This week is the officiallaunching Unions Fisherman Islands and its campaign to make the precinct a better and safer place to work and to ensure that your rights at work are protected. The campaign will be ongoing in 2008 and your involvement will be crucial to its success. Watch for more newsletters and get involved by calling your union. This newsletter can be downloaded below.
