Union aid for BurmaBy Maritime Union of Australia
Australian workers urged to dig deep to support Burmese people via Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin is calling on members to help aid the people of Burma not the military junta by directing all funds to the cyclone victims through the Australian Trade Union movement's overseas aid organization Union Aid Abroad. "It is clear from news reports that the military regime is siphoning off world aid or blocking it reaching the people who having long lost their democratic rights have now also lost them homes and families. For this reason members should direct their donations through union grass roots channels to ensure it goes where it is so badly needed."
Union Aid Abroad (APHEDA) which has been working for a long time with the people of Burma, launched an appeal in the wake of the devastating cyclone that hit Burma last week.
Latest reports put the death toll at 22500, with a further million people homeless.
"This is a humanitarian disaster on an unimaginable scale and we are asking all Australians to donate through Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA," said Sharan Burrow, ACTU President. "Disaster relief work is already underway by union affiliated grassroots organisations on the ground."
