The union's Darwin branch covers offshore workers on oil and gas facilities in the Timor Sea and waterside workers in the port, exporting live cattle, and goods to neighbouring South East Asia.
Known as the Gateway to the North, the port is the nation's hub for trade in the region and is rapidly expanding, with the AU$200 million port facilities at East Arm linking with the Adelaide to Darwin railway and, by sea lane to Asia.
The port has a long history. It was bombed by the Japanese in 1942, killing 24 waterside workers and 11 seafarers.
The branch has strong ties with neighbouring Timor, with the union supporting the Timorese independence struggle and, at home, the battle for land rights and equal pay for the Gurindji people at Wave Hill.
ITF COMMUNICATIONS UNIT 20 Jan 2012 ITF President Paddy Crumlin has flown to London to hold urgent talks with the ITF and dockers' unions to discuss the escalating situation with the Port of Auckland - and the severe effects on the Maritime Union of New Zealand.
