Union elder Brian Manning a finalist for Australian of the Year
Brian Manning, one time Darwin Branch Secretary, waterside worker and long time activist for Aboriginal land rights and Timorese independence is a finalist for the territory's Australian of the Year Awards.
He stands besides winning recipients as follows:
Australian of the Year: Warwick Thornton, Producer/Director of Samson & Delilah
Senior Territorian: Alan Langworthy, Technological Innovator of renewable energy\ systems toprovide "city quality" power for remote communities
Young Australian: Liam Jurrah, Wailpri Aboriginal from Yuendemu drafted to AFL
Local Hero: Norma Higgins Katherine Horticulturalist
Brian was nominated for the Senior Territorian.
He is still active in the union currently chairing the Darwin PortWelfare Committee. But is best known for helping run an underground radio supporting the Timorese resistance to the Indonesian invasion in 1975 and the Gurindji strikers at Wattle Creek and Wave Hill in the sixties. Brian appeared in ABC documentaries of the strike commemorating the 40 year anniversary
