The South Australian Branch of the Maritime Union of Australia Division (MUA) of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime, Employees Union (CFMEU) is seeking an adaptive, energetic and enthusiastic administrative worker to take responsibility for the administrative functions of the Branch in a dynamic role that combines Front-of-House duties with a mixture of communications, organising and advocacy work under direction by the Branch Secretary and the Branch Organiser.

Working independently and requiring a significant capacity for self-direction, the role is located in the MUA’s South Australian branch office in Port Adelaide and reports to the Branch Secretary. The Branch Coordinator is the first point of contact for members, visitors and travelling officials or officers of the Union in Adelaide.

Candidates will have experience in providing responsive and proactive administrative services in a dynamic and varied workplace environment. As an important part of a small, busy team of staff, organisers and officials, candidates for the role should be bring a problem-solving mindset and have a willingness to tackle new tasks and challenges as the needs and operations of the Union evolve. Additionally, candidates will be expected to have strong time management skills and be able to work under pressure to deliver work to a series of recurring and ad-hoc deadlines.

The role combines the duties of a receptionist, office coordinator and member services officer with communications, campaigns, social media and inter-union or intra-labour council engagement with other unions and civil society organisations as the needs of the Branch may require from time to time.

The position would suit someone with a demonstrated capacity to provide high level administrative support alongside effective communications or campaigns advice and support who wants to transition into a rewarding, challenging and purposeful career in the trade union movement.

Essential attributes include:

  • Organised, diligent and attentive administration worker
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office / 365
  • Strong interpersonal skills including by telephone and face to face
  • Experience using social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Threads/X and TikTok
  • Willingness and capacity to build skills using specialist software including Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Premiere or InDesign
  • Capacity to use online tools like Canva, MailChimp, Wordpress highly desirable
  • Experience with membership databases (eg iMIS or equivalent) highly desirable
