Speech by Wayne Swan, Deputy PM and Treasurer at "All That's Left: What Labor Should Stand For" book launch, Parliament House, Canberra, yesterday
The Labor Party is in the position of review and renew after dodging a bullet on August 21 at the federal polls, the Deputy PM Wayne Swan said.
Wayne Swan was speaking on the ocassion of the book launch of All That's Left: What Labor Should Stand For by Nick Dyrenfurth and Tim Soutphommasane at Parliament House, Canberra.
"I look around the room at G20 meetings and there's only about five other countries that still have centre-left governments, and we're one of them," he said.
"It's a tough time for progressive governments around the world. The Right is rampant, and they're all peddling the same kind of opportunistic, populist, sloganistic rubbish we've seen Tony Abbott copy from the Tea Party.
The Deputy PM said books like Dyrenfurth's feed our hunger for reform, nourish our philosophy, inspire us and spur us on.
"We've got a better story to tell than any of our counterparts," he said.
