Pike River Mining Disaster Relief Fund

Eleven of the 16 miners killed were members of the EPMU including union delegate Blair Sims. Help their widows and families this Xmas.

The union has set up an account with the Maritime, Mining and Power Credit Union to accept donations which will be passed to the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) Pike River Miners Family Support Trust

 Half of the funds donated will be contributed to a community fund being administered by the Grey District Council and half will be used to establish a dedicated fund for the education of the children of those killed. The trustees will be local union representatives.

The Pike River Coal Mine explosion of 19 November 2010 is New Zealand's worst mining disaster for 96 years.

Eleven of the 16 miners killed were members of the EPMU including union delegate Blair Sims. The other 13 men killed were local contractors.

 

On 14 December receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers announced 114 redundancies at Pike River Coal Ltd out of the total remaining workforce of 140. Half of those employed by the company are EPMU members.
