The MUA has joined forces with the CFMEU to raise awareness of violence against women in the global 16 days of activism.
All divisions of the union participated by discussing the issue at meetings and on worksites.
The union created an information flyer that was distributed throughout our membership.
66 woman have died at the hands of a partner or former partner this year in Australia. Domestic and family violence is at a crisis point that requires action.
The union used the 16 days of activism to spread the word that to change this trend we must change our society. Respect for women and the inequality they face are two factors that need addressing.
National Divisional Women's representative of the MUA Division Mich-Elle Myers said "The MUA have been involved in this cause for a long time. The women's committee used to raise money for women's shelters and then the union moved onto supporting White Ribbon and all of our officials became ambassadors"
She continued "We are beyond the awareness raising stage now, we know there is a problem and we need to take real action to stop gender based violence in our workplaces, our homes and our community"
The federal government just passed legislation to allow victim survivors to take 5 days unpaid family violence leave so they can attend to moving house, doctors appointments and legal appointments without losing their jobs. This is not enough.
The Australian Union movement is supporting the ASU campaign for 10 days paid family violence leave. Victim survivors need paid leave to help get them to safety without an economic cost.
