A message from the rail and transport union

Published: 22 May 2014

This is a tribute from the Rail and Maritime Transport Union in New Zealand to worker Anthony Attard who was killed on the job earlier this week in Melbourne.

Brother Paddy,

We were shocked to hear the terrible news of a death on the Webb Dock in Melbourne.

Please accept the sincere sympathy and heartfelt condolence of the RMTU NZ to the members of the MUA, especially the Victoria Branch at the terrible news of the death of brother Anthony Attard whilst working a ro-ro vessel at Webb Dock East 1. Our aroha, thoughts and best wishes are with the family and Anthony’s workmates at this sad and tragic time. It is truly appalling that in 2014 the death and disablement of wharfies and port workers continues unabated on both sides of the Tasman. This needless loss must cease and I know that the MUA, like us, is passionately advocating for enhanced safety conditions on the waterfront. We know that there is more damage done in these needless deaths than just a single life ending, the true effects are felt much more widely and have a higher social cost.

If there is any assistance or otherwise we can offer then please do not hesitate to sing out.
