INTERNATIONAL: Felix Anthony is new PDP leader

Former Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) general secretary, Felix Anthony was today elected the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party during the party's annual congress in Lautoka.

Anthony, who resigned from FTUC earlier in the week to contest the leadership role, told FijiLive he was always confident about his chances and he sees his election as an opportunity and a challenge.

“People have shown confidence in me and given me this honour but it’s going to be a challenge because this election will be a difficult one,” Anthony said.

He said this was because of the new electoral system and the restrictions in place and because the country has been in dictatorship for the last eight years.

“A lot of people are hurt and would want change and we don’t anticipate an easy election and we won’t underestimate this challenge.

“We will work hard and we have people who are committed and we see this as an opportunity to unite the people of Fiji,” he said.

Former University of the South Pacific law lecturer, Lynda Tabuya was elected the party president while Aman Ravindra Singh was elected the general secretary.

Vijay Singh was elected the party treasurer while former interim secretary Sat Narayan was elected as one of the four vice presidents. Six board members were also elected during the congress.
