Port of Hastings may be set to become Victoria’s newest container port, but is it the right move?
"The Maritime Union of Australia wants to see the Port of Melbourne fully utilised before other options are considered," MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin said today.
"If there is to be a second container terminal site, the government needs to include shipping as part of an integrated container freight network whereby the Port of Melbourne acts as a trans-shipment port for larger vessels, with suitable shuttle ships to move freight to Hastings for distribution throughout Victoria.
"The possible use of Hastings raises many questions regarding suitable road and rail links to the site in order to create a comprehensive freight transport strategy for Victoria."
