Members of the Maritime Union of Australia Queensland Branch have instructed the union to take steps to fight back against the current wage and conditions on offer by Transdev-run Brisbane Ferries.
The dedicated workers on the Brisbane River provide outstanding service and commitment to the public and take pride in doing so, according to Queensland Deputy Branch Secretary Jason Miners.
“This group of workers is now facing a hostile employer who wants to see the average worker lose hundreds of dollars in take-home pay through attacks on penalty rates and overtime,” Miners said.
The workers have asked the union the MUA to file for protected industrial action.
“What’s important to these workers is continuing to provide the current service with no disruptions for the public which is why any action will NOT involve a disruption of service to the Brisbane River commuters,” he said.
“We hope that as many people as possible will support these workers who are simply asking for a fair go.
“The workers’ collective action will involve not taking fares for passengers, not wearing uniforms and not turning on ticketing machines.
“This decision was not taken lightly and we find it unfortunate that we have had to take this path.
“We’re asking the public supports a fair go for ferry workers.”
