"It was a bit hairy, but we missed out on most of it," says Terry O'Shane, MUA. "A big rain just started. We’ll see how it goes from here."
For the northern townships of Queensland the worst has past. There's been no loss of life, but plenty or damage in the wake of the Cyclone Yasi. And ports will remain closed for a time.
"It sort of veered away from Cairns," said Laurie Horgan, MUA. "Mackay was untouched. But Townsville got a bit of a shake up. Our Townsville office inundated this morning by the tidal surge."
As of yesterday, at 11 am in the morning, MSQ reported the following status of QLD ports:
CLOSED
Cape Flattery, Port Douglas, Cairns , Mourilyan, Cooktown, Innisfail, Lucinda, Townsville, Abbot Point, Mackay, Port Hay Poin,t Port Whitsunday pilotage area Bundaberg (because of previous flooding)
OPERATIONAL
Karumba - yellow alert issued (to be confirmed), Weipa - but on notice for strong winds.
Cargo operations and vessel movements are being monitored (to be confirmed) Port Alma -operational but subject to nav restrictions owing to draught restrictions from previous flooding * Gladstone - fully operational as normal , Thursday Island/Horn Island
