Behavioural Based Safety - Not On

Published: 14 Oct 2010

BBS systems are about blaming workers. Worse still they promote workers blaming workers and create division and disunity within workplaces.

DuPont is but one branded example of a BBS System.

It seems that Patrick has dropped off the DuPont brand but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that they are still pursuing a BBS approach to the workplace.

The attached documents and links show how we can identify the rollout of BBS systems in our workplaces.

The MUA rolled out the first training session relating to BBS at Patrick Port Botany on Friday. The meeting was extremely productive and clearly identified the company's rollout of BBS systems within the terminal.

The MUA rejects the BBS type of safety approach and stands firmly behind the provision of safe systems of work in workplaces.

The concept of blaming workers for accidents does nothing but absolve the responsibility of employers toward taking a careful and appropriate approach to the well-being of workers.

BBS systems are about blaming workers. Worse still they promote workers blaming workers and create division and disunity within workplaces. Clearly these objectives of the employers must be rejected and fought against.

Needless to say the Patrick Port Botany Union Committee and the Sydney Branch will be dealing with the matter at the terminal level.

ANTI BBS TRAINING

The short course is well worthwhile and the rollout of such training is important and should occur in every workplace.

The National Office will be working with branches to ensure the broadest roll-out of this awareness campaign.

Please find  below links, documents and downloads relating to our waterfront safety campaign. These documents are a resource for delegates and officials in identifying Behavioural Based Safety (BBS) systems which are becoming more prevalent in workplaces and increasingly popular amongst employers.
