ITF Asia Pacific Womens Forum 14th-15th May

This meeting had historical significance for the ITF women's strategy, as it marked 10 years from the 1st ITF meeting held in Tokyo in 1997. The meeting in 1997 was the first to be specifically aimed at addressing transport women's issues. At this initial meeting a broad strategy was developed and fed into the Delhi Congress in 1998 where the 1st ITF women's committee was elected.

The 2007 forum in Tokyo was being held to ensure that regional women's activities and focus was being co-ordinated in line with the new ITF direction of "Organising Globally".

As the previous Chair of the AP women's conference (Delhi 2005) and the Vice Chair of the global ITF's women's committee I was asked to also chair this conference. Some 30 women participants attended covering all the Asian subregions and ITF sections.

We reviewed previous recommendations and workshopped such topics as what the region required from the ITF Secretariat to assist in delivering the "Organising Globally" strategy for women transport workers in the Asia/pacific. Results of these workshops that affect Australia and more particularly the MUA's participation are the recommendations that Australia and NZ revive the previous practice of holding women's education seminars, with the inclusion of our affiliates from the pacific islands sending women participants (the regional office's have previously neglected these areas in the Oceania).

Also discussed was the resolution that Australian affiliates (MUA and ASU) help the New Delhi office at co-ordinating an organising campaign for Call centres attached to the transport industry in the Asia/pacific. The Delhi office is in the process of commissioning research work now to identify where these are based and what organisations they are linked to- shipping, logistics etc. With the help of this research we aim to workshop a number of strategies and begin the call centre organising campaign.
