Women@Work: International Campaigns

Elimination of violence against women

November 25th marked the United Nations (UN) day of action for the "Elimination of violence against women". The MUA was amongst a large number of international unions that held activities to mark the day and raise its awareness amongst their members.

The ITF has marked November 25th as a "day of action" and is committed to developing concrete and practical measures to address violence against women, as an issue which affects transport workers in their jobs, on the streets and in their homes.
It also called on unions globally to mark November 25th, the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

"Women transport workers often face problems of violence occupationally. Working shifts also exposes them as does travelling at unsocial hours when they are at greater at risk"

MUA women members spoke at stop work meetings in NSW and WA on the 25th November to raise the awareness for "Elimination of Violence against women" and then passed the hat around for donations to go to our local women's refuges and other women's organisations.

$250 was raised in Sydney with the proceeds going to the NSW women's refuge resource Centre (WRRC) which focuses on coordinating all NSW women and children's refuges, creates an awareness through education programmes for women and the public on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, liaises with the media, and plays a crucial role in government policy and legislation development in this area.

In WA money was also raised on Nov 25th, with Karen Leavy (MUA delegate) presenting the cheque with the honourable Carol Martin (MP) WA member for Kimberleys to the "Indigenous women of the Kimberleys" to fund their annual bush meeting in May 2004.

"The response from MUA members was very encouraging, and we hope to continue this type of support long into the future"
