Women@Work: International CampaignsTransport Women on the agenda.The recent ACTU/NZCTU/ITF conference saw local ITF affiliated transport unions make a committment to further improve the state of women within their unions. A cross Tasman conference of transport unions occurred this week, (31st March-2nd April) in Auckland NZ. Where 'Women' were one of the many issues that made the agenda. Sue Virago the ITF's women's regional representative, addressed the conference participants on the need to maintain women's networks, work towards established women's structures, and bargain for family flexibility regardless of the levels of female participation. She spoke on the progress of gender issue's within the trade union movement focusing on the last 20years. Sue also referred to a resolution moved by twenty (20) transport women during a recent education seminar held in Sydney, which was then endorsed by the New Zealand conference. "Transport unions will organise, train and encourage the active involvement of their women memebrs and establish women's structures and international ties. Transport unions will endeavour to reserve positions for women on decision-making bodies and allocate budgets to facilitate affirmative strategies." The regional conference was attended by seven (7) women representatives. All of which are in or have joined the ITF women's network. |
