Women@Work: Our History
Women's First WWF Stopwork
Following is an extract from the "Maritime Worker" published, 15th of February 1977....
Two women members of the Federation attended their first stopwork meeting in Whyalla on January 27.
There are three women checkers, three men checkers and twelve general purposes members now members of the Whyalla branch.
Their admission to member ship was granted in October 1976.
The Australian Worker's Union had agreed to the transfer of union membership.
The general purposes men are employed by BHP within the wharf area.
The checkers also work within the wharf area; their duties include the checking of cargo to and from the ship's holds.
Their Duties include stevedoring operations such as cleaning up the wharf area, and the mooring and unmooring of vessels......
Currently, they are paid a base rate of $121.70 and receive a fluctuating bonus.
Following the stop work meeting, further discussions have taken place with the company in Sydney.
This meeting was attended by the President and Secretary of the Whyalla Branch, together with the writer.
A progress report following these discussions was to be given to a stopwork meeting as Maritime Worker went to press.
