The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) believes a fatal accident could be imminent at the VICT Terminal at Melbourne’s Webb Dock, with four safety-related incidents this week on top of five incidents the week before.
The MUA has commenced negotiations with DP World for a new agreement for around 1800 MUA wharfies and maintenance workers. DP World is one of the biggest agreements in the stevedoring industry and it has started with DP World attacking workers rights and conditions. The first round of meetings took place on 4-7 September.
The MUA expresses grave concerns over the Liberal/National Parties and ALP opposition’s support for the the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP-11) and calls on its members, the broader labour movement and the community to oppose the adoption of the trade deal.
Five accidents in quick succession this week at the VICT terminal with a hospitalisation overnight has raised fears of an imminent fatality at the dock.
