Nigerian dock workers feared dead

18 February 2003

Unionists missing, presumed dead after clash with security forces and oil giant

Security forces clashed with dockworkers protesting against oil giant Chevron use of non union labour in the Nigerian port of Escravos in late January, leading to two dockworkers presumed drowned and three arrests.

Concerns over the safety of dockers reached the International Transport Workers Federation after the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) dispatched a team to investigate.

ITF Online News reports that MWUN President, Onikoalese Irabor, has written to Nigeria's transport minister to complain about the oil company's actions while the ITF has contacted the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) which is making approaches to Chevron.
