Shipping magnates' make rich list

03 March 2004

Shipping fortunes are on the rise with many of the big ship owners now making the Forbes Rich List - Tradewinds reports

The Bill Gates of the shipping world is Carnival boss Micky Arison whose fortune is now estimated at $5.9bn -- an 80% increase since last year, according to Forbes.

Also on the list are:

Maersk magnate Mc-Kinney Moller ranked 82 whose fortune has more than doubled to $5.1bn.

Arison's sister Shari is the third richest shipowner. Estimated fortune of $4.6bn.

Sipro Latsis and his family continue to be the top Greek shipping fortune ranked 103rd with a fortune worth $4.4bn.

Robert Kuok Hock Nien is the top Asian shipping billionaire, placed 111th with a fortune estimated to be around $4.2bn.

Kuok, who controls Pacific Carriers and Malaysian Bulk Carriers, has seen his fortune increase by almost 25%, with the next richest Asian being Star Cruises patriarch Lim Goh Tong (worth $2.1bn and ranked 262) .

Others further down the list of billionaires are Adrian Swire, French shipowner Gerard Louis-Dreyfus, Sammy Ofer and his brother Yuli with their Ofer shipping interests including Zodiac Maritime, Tanker Pacific and to a large extent the entire Zim Israel Navigation shipping company.

Also back on the list is Norwegian tanker titan John Fredriksen, with Washington Marine Group Dennis Washington and Arne Wilhelmsen tied on 310th place with fortunes of $1.8bn.

Wilhelmsen, whose fortune is based on his stake in Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and tankers, makes his first appearance on the list.

Also maritime-related is Li Ka-shing controller of ports-to-telecoms conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa. Tradewinds reports that Asia's richest businessman is reputed to have a fortune worth some $12.4bn and ranks 19th.

This year's Forbes 'Rich List', the eighteenth, consists of 587 billionaires who collectively are worth an obscene $1.9 trillion.
