Face scan floated as secure ID for seafarers16 June 2003
A new high-tech seafarers' identity card based on biometrics could emerge from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), according to a report by Jim Mulrenan of Tradewinds newspaper ILO members are moving to replace photo IDs in favour of a biometric data based on the iris, facial measurements or other unique physical features. A model biometric identity card could be ready for use within a year. But it is far from being the norm, with Third World countries the main base for manning-agents. Tradewinds report that phase-in would vary, however, as the document would be issued by the governments of crewing nations or an international organisation.
