In support of MUA members Ross McKeon and David Byron, Sydney Branch organised a fundraiser at the South Sydney Leagues Club in Kingsford on February 28 — A Sporting Gesture.
Around 200 members and their families attended, raising $20,000 from the nights’ auction and MUA rolling funds to be shared by both families.
There too were representatives of P&O Port Botany who had donated items for auction along with members of and management at White Bay and trucking companies.
Special speakers were former first grade League player and CEO of the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation David Liddiard, former first grade league player and president of the Rugby League Players’ Association Anthony Butterfield and former world kick boxing champ Adam Watt.
Sporting memorabilia auctioned off by MC Sean Chaffer included a football and jersey signed by the Newcastle Knights, a tracksuit jacket signed by Kieren Perkins and a framed t-shirt signed by Australian grand prix debut drivers.
Central NSW Branch Secretary Robert Coombs then made the presentation to Ross and David on behalf of members, before mining and maritime leaders Tony Maher and Paddy Crumlin announced the establishment of a special scholarship. They said money will go each year towards furthering the education of workers and their families. It will be named after the Byron and McKeon families.
“Everyone has been so supportive,” said Ross. “I don’t know if I could have done it without all the help and understanding from my workmates those first few months. I really appreciate every bit I get.”
“It was a wonderful night,” said Dave. “All the support from the union and fellow workers was tremendous. It’s like a battery. You get a real charge. I got strength from the evening and I brought that strength home to my wife.”
Dave is also one of the survivors of the Bali bombing who have raised thousands of dollars for Balinese victims of the blast and their families.
