By Warren Smith - Assistant Sydney Branch Secretary
On Tuesday August 31 the MUA members at Patrick Port Botany overwhelmingly endorsed their new three year Enterprise Agreement. The meeting held at Yarra Bay Sailing Club voted 90% in favour of the new agreement.
The new agreement is a great step forward for Patrick workers and the MUA and has delivered 41 new permanent rostered jobs. It will also see 53 supplementary employees go to the PGE category. The PGE category of employment ha s been substantially improved also with a number of improvements including superior leave calculations and a PGE roster system as well as an increase in guaranteed wages from $20,000 to $30,000.
The agreement has also seen a provision for 13 days a year personal leave, a 12% compounded pay rise and a marked increase in the rights of union delegates on the job with a delegates rights charter. Supplementary employees will also be eliminated from the day to day terminal operations.
One of the greatest features of the agreement is the fact that working arrangements for straddle operators have been largely fixed particularly in the yard with the onset of a relief system and three structured 30 minute breaks from driving in an 8 hour shift. No straddle driver will have to drive for more than 2 hours.
The Sydney Branch is very happy with the outcome of the meeting and with the contents of the agreement which see significant improvements for the members.
