Zimbabwe arms embargo still in force12 May 2008By MUA news -
Union campaign to prevent bloodshed in Zimbabwe by blocking arms delivery in African ports still has teeth The Chinese flagged An Yue Jiang and its load of weapons for the Mugabe regime has yet to return to China and unions remain alert. Last reports it was approximately 120 nautical miles off the coast of Namibia, in international waters, making around 8.5 knots The International Transport Workers' Federation has helped mobilise trade unions across Southern Africa to block the delivery of the arms for Zimbabwe, and make it impossible for them to be removed from the ship on land or sea. And in Australia the Maritime Union has worked with the ACTU to get Australian government recognition and backing for the union action. "For over two weeks working men and women have kept these bullets and bombs out of the hands of Mugabe's killers," said ITF General Secretary David Cockfroft. "That work continues. The ship and its cargo of destruction remain under close watch. Any attempt to further arm the Government of Zimbabwe will be resisted." Meanwhile the Maritime Union is joining others around the world condemning the arrests of Lovemore Motombo and Wellington Chibebe, respectively President and General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). The two trade union leaders were charged with "inciting people to rise against the government and reporting falsehoods about people being killed" in speeches given on May Day.
