MUA members march for peace14 February 2003
Maritime workers will be marching under the union banner in mass peace rallies being held around the nation this weekend. "The Australian people have made it clear they've had enough of Howard Government warmongering," said MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "These demonstrations reflect the determination of Australians to be heard on this matter." ACTU President Sharan Burrow has called on union members and their families to join the rallies and campaign for peace, condemning the Howard Government for its rush to be involved in a US led war. In Fremantle MUA Branch Secretary Wal Pritchard has led the call to have US war ships moved out of the harbour, warning that heavy US presence makes the port a prime terrorist target. He will be speaking at tomorrow's rally on behalf of Unions WA as debate rages in the local media over whether workers should walk off construction sites and wharves during upcoming peace rallies. Further rallies are already lined up for Fremantle with a Picnic for Peace followed by a peace procession by candlelight on March 16. In response to a spate of anti-union attacks the branch has circulated the following response to a misinformation campaign being run against the MUA in WA.
