Imprisoned unionist wins human rights award

17 September 2008

By MUA news -

Iranian unionist Mansour Osanloo president of the Tehran bus drivers' union has been honoured with the Solidar Silver Rose Award in recognition of his struggle for social justice and equility

The International Transport Workers' Federation and International Trade Union Confederation nominated Mansour Osanloo and the Vahed Syndicate for the award and both organisations describe themselves as delighted at the decision.

The Maritime Union has been actively involved in a worldwide campaign to see Osanloo released from prison.

At the March 8 International Day of Action in support of Osanloo MUA National Secretary and ITF executive board member Paddy Crumlin said:

"Australian workers will not stand by and allow this systematic attack on human & worker's rights. We must do all in our power demonstrate solidarity with Osanloo, Mahmoud Salehi and all others who suffer persecution for simply organising themselves in the workplace."

However Osanloo remains in prision and is unlikely to be able to receive his award in person when it is presented at the European Parliament in Brussels in October.

The Iranian Trade Union leader has been repeatedly attacked and arrested for his trade union involvement. He is currently in the notorious Evin prison for the third time in two years, for allegedly endangering Iran's national security and criticising the regime.

The ITF , Amnesty International and the ITUC backed by their member unions argue that the real reason he has been targeted is because he is a member of a free trade union and not controlled by the government.

More than 10,000 people have watched Osanloo's story on YouTube.
