MUA meeting with Dubia Ports re P&O takeover01 December 2005By MUA News -
MUA national officials will meet with Dubia Ports executive in Sydney today to discuss P&O takeover. P&O reassures union "business as usual" National officers will meet with Dubai Ports World executives in Sydney today to discuss the company takeover of P&O. PDW chair Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem yesterday announced the takeover was not a cost-cutting exercise and he did not anticipate job losses. "On the contrary, there will be more hiring because there is a lot of growth in the business," Bin Sulayem told Lloyds List daily. Meanwhile P&O Maritime Services managing director Andrew King has written to MUA Assistant National Secretary Mick Doleman stating the offer simply relates to ownership of P&O shares and that he expects no changes to the management or running of the company. The union will seek first hand assurances on job security and conditions at today's meeting. The MUA is also closely following reports that Toll is hedging its bets on the success of its hostile takeover bid of Patrick by touting for P&O's Australian stevedoring business. Members will be notified of any further developments as they arise.
