Bluff Strike Update - Arrests18 July 2003By Wayne Butson General Secretary RMTU -
Organiser Paul Corliss and Bluff Branch Officers Evan Lewis and Tom Smith arrested at the Bluff Picket in New Zealand.
Despite this setback the Union's national President Jim Kelly remains on-site and will provide leadership whilst we await the release on bail of the three. It is a sad tragedy that even though the picket was peaceful police still felt the need to arrest the strikers. It is a sad reality in NZ today that police only move swiftly in the preservation of the interests of capitalists whereas daily we see evidence of police neglect elsewhere. International messages of solidarity are coming in and have been read out to the picketers. The messages gave a deeper resolve to the workers secure in the knowledge that workers throughout the world support them. I am sure that you will join with me in wishing the arrested workers a safe and speedy return to picket line duty. In solidarity Wayne Butson Ph: 0064 4 4736693 Fax: 0064 4 4710896
