MUA OPENS SECOND FRONT

National Retired members association formed

The first National retired members conference was held in Sydney on the 20th September.

The Maritime Union held its first National conference of retired members from around Australia during the Maritime and Mining conference being held in Newcastle the MUA at the request of a number of retired members branches convened the meeting in Sydney.

Over 50 delegates attended including members from branches of the CFMEU Mining Division retired associations.

The conference considered and endorsed the establishment of a national association of MUA retired members under a single name and constitution, and that what they did.

The conference confirmed the national bobby to be known as the NATIONAL MUA VERERANS ASSOCIATION with the slogan "RETIRED FROM THE WORKFORCE- NOT THE STRUGGLE" in addition to this the conference adopted a constitution also to assist the development of the association.

Speakers discussed the important role association members can and do play in their retired life with a wealth of experience and commitment to the MUA and the union movement.

The conference put in place a program of activity that includes the following,

• Grow the association in branches the currently operate and establish branch where they don't.

• Development of a national publication.

• Seek MUA support for a web page on the MUA site for the Association.

• Provide a speaker to the Monthly meetings on issues affecting retired members of the union.

• Work towards a National Conference to be held within a year.

The conference also elected their National Representatives being.

National President Harry Black.

National Secretary Bill Bodenham

National Treasury Barry Fuz

All those who attended the conference pledge themselves to work hard to develop the association.
